What is Margin?

Margin financing allows you to use cash or securities as collateral for a loan to leverage your trading positions.
Effective use of margin can increase your purchasing power in stocks and ETFs beyond the value of cash and/or securities held in your account. This is an attractive option for frequent traders or investors aiming for long-term returns.
Margin is treated as a "credit facility," with the amount you can borrow depending on your financial situation and the collateral value of assets in your account.

When the leverage of a margin account is facilitated through a loan, interest charges apply. The loan interest is calculated from the settlement date of the transaction financed by the loan.

Daily interest is calculated based on the net cash balance of each sub-account (in different currencies) and is charged monthly.

You can view the transaction costs related to individual financial instruments under "Trading Conditions" on the platform. Additionally, you can review the "Margin Interest Details" on the trading platform for a breakdown of account charges.

Assume you deposit $10,000 in a margin account and plan to purchase 1,000 shares of a US-listed stock, ABC, at $25 per share.

Stock ABC has a risk rating of 1, with an initial margin ratio of 63% and a maintenance margin ratio of 70% (valuation discount = 30%). This means you need to deposit 37% of the trade value as collateral (cash or position) to open the position. This gives you effective leverage of up to 2.70 times the funds at the time of opening the position.

After the trade, your net cash balance will change from $10,000 to -$15,000, as you have now borrowed $15,000 to finance the $25,000 position value.

After the trade, you will use 86% of the account's maintenance margin value. This leaves you with $750 in unused initial margin to open a new position worth up to $2,027 (assuming a stock risk rating of 1 with an initial margin ratio of 63%).
